There’s Nothing New About The News

Originally a rapper, and then a poet, for the last year Tom Bishop has been occupying that loose sliding space that lingers between the two, the stripped down art known as spoken word.

After connecting with him during one of his live performances last month at Sandbar’s grime and hip hop night, Mic Check, I had the pleasure of collaborating with him to film one of his pieces – ‘There’s Nothing New About The News’.

In simple terms: He provided the poetry and performance, I provided the videography. You can take a look at the results of our work below.

  1. Reminded me of a scripture: Ecclesiastes 1:9 That which has been is that which will be, and that which has been done is that which will be done, so there is nothing new under the sun.

    1. So very apt. It’s interesting to see the varying ways the same cycle can be played out between those who have power and those who don’t. The surface of things change, yet the underlying roots remain from one generation to the next.

  2. Micah,
I thought Betty’s answer and your reply were fitting. Lots of thoughts swirling and I can’t put it all in a comment. I keep praying and I keep doing what I can to be part of the Good News, doing my little part to bring light and love and to believe even my little bit can make a difference…Thanks for sharing your work and Tom’s spoken word.

    1. Thanks Dolly! And thanks so much for your kind words. I hope and seek to play a similar part. I’ve often experienced how those little bits of light and love can make a huge difference. And when all’s said and done, light and love are the only differences that matter.

  3. Nice work! You guys make a good team. Conscious art is always interesting because not only does it have an entertaining aspect it also makes you think. I enjoy this.

    1. Thanks!! And I couldn’t agree more. I think conscious art is the truest kind of art there is. I love when something can be entertaining and thought-provoking at the same time.

  4. Hi Micah,

Thanks for stopping by my post about the family of five who died. Sorry my blogging has been inconsistent lately.

You changed your site a lot, huh? That’s fun. Congrats on the new job at the Nubian Times. How have the last few months gone for you?

So, how IS Brexit affecting you? 🙂

    1. How have I not seen this comment until now??!! Regardless, apologies for the incredibly belated reply. The last few months – which I guess will be a different last few from the few you were originally asking about (if that makes sense) – have gone pretty well. A bit busier than I usually like to be, but it’s with good things so I’m not complaining much about it. As for my thoughts on Brexit? Well, they are long and convoluted and probably not all that entertaining. A conversation for another time perhaps ;). I hope you’re well though Jennifer. And thanks for stopping by to visit.
