Laughter: The Uncivilised Friend

Let me explain… I was directed recently to this clip on youtube. Take a look first (it’s just over a minute long), then read on.

So here’s the thing. I’m not ashamed to say that after watching it I couldn’t breathe for a full minute from the laughter. You know the kind of laughter I mean, that laughter that stretches the expiration point of your lungs until there’s no more air and you can conjure no more sound to even laugh with and you just have to sit there with your shoulders shuddering and quivering in a dry and soundless cackle until whatever part of your psyche decides the full measure of your amusement has been expressed and your insides, clenched and thoroughly — as the expression goes — split along the seams, finally relent from their death grasp of jollity that had for a minute or more (depending on just how amusing you found the clip) claimed you and separated you from your surroundings in a mad chuckling fit.

Then again, maybe your sense of humour isn’t quite like mine. In which case you’ll watch the clip and then re-read this post with a lamenting shake of the head, wondering where the humour’s meant to be, questioning everything from my moral fibre to my intellect, perhaps wondering whether or not you ought ever to return to this blog to read any further content.

That’s the thing about humour, everyone’s sense of it is different. And it turns out those differences have interesting implications. Laughter has been shown to influence problem solving capacities and creativity, amongst other things.

So, if you’d like to learn a little more about how the surprising benefits of laughter could help you get more productive then click right… here.

  1. Although westerns are more subtle in their humor and nuance can play a big part in it, Filipinos’ sense of hilarity doesn’t differ much. The video clip is indeed wacky, btw.
And I also still giggle like a girl. 🙂

Some posts on Tumbler, in case you drop by there, I find funny or entertaining, like the one below:

Okay so I found my dead grandfather’s journal from 56 years ago. This is some old stuff, okay, and I was like yeah I’m gonna read a page or two.

Basically he wrote down this road trip he did with a friend of his (name is Giulio) but at some point it gets so weird.

I’ll try my best to translate it from italian to english (english is not my first language) and well, I’m also having a hard time trying to read my gandpa’s writing cause he wrote like a drunk snail.

Now, beware, my grandfather was an italian man dedicated to work, church, work and work, who believed in the traditional family and all that Jazz. But at some point I reach this part where he writes: “yesterday me and Giulio slept in the same tent as mine was stolen at the gas station. As it was really cold, we slept close. In the middle of the night I realized that the warmth next to me did not belong to my Nadia (his fiancé at the time, my grandmother). It was the most intense feeling I’ve ever felt”.

And I was like allright that’s some weird no homo bullshit but who cares.

“I was having a cigarette whilst Giulio was asleep in the car, having a nap before we hit the road again. In the midst of the smoke of my tobacco, I saw his face and thought that the woman who is going to marry him will be lucky”.

    Grandpa, what the hell?

“We shared a bed. Old motel did not have spare rooms, it was awkward at first. Then I started thinking that the warmth of Giulio’s body is somehow becoming more familiar to me then Nadia’s.”

Now, I have like seventy more pages of this goddamn journal but I am pretty fucking sure my gandfather had the worst crush over his best friend.

      1. I adore basking in humor so if you have anything funny again to share, please do so. If I come across anything hilarious, I’ll share them to you, too. I actually have plenty, but didn’t bother to gather and organize them. Drat. 🙂
